Black money case: Centre discloses more names to Supreme Court

The Centre today disclosed before the Supreme Court eight more names including that of Pradip Burman, one of Dabur IndiaBSE -3.06 % promoters, a bullion trader and Goa miners against whom it has started prosecution for allegedly stashing blackmoney in foreign banks.

Rajkot-based bullion trader Pankaj Chimanlal Lodhya and Goa-based mining company Timblo Private Limited and its five Directors were among the names that figured in the list which was filed in the Supreme Court by the government.

The affidavit, filed days after the government came under attack from political rivals that it was chary of revealing names, said that these names have been received from French authorities and other countries.

Promising to disclose more names of black money holders who have come under its scanner, the government said that all foreign bank accounts cannot be termed as "illegal".

The additional affidavit on the black money issue was filed today in furtherance of its affidavit recently when it had said that names of account holders in foreign banks cannot be disclosed till there is evidence of tax evasion against them and prosecution is launched in India.

While Burman's name was received from French authorities the names of Lodhia and others have been received from "other countries".

The list names Timblo Private Limited and its Directors Mrs Radha Satish Timblo, Chetan S Timblo, Rohan S Timblo, Mrs Anna C Timblo and Mrs Mallika R Timblo. It was not clear whether the account holder is the company or its Directors.
Shortly after the disclosure in the Supreme Court, Dabur India promoter family, Burmans said the account complied with all legal requirements.

"We wish to state that this account was opened when he (Pradip) was an NRI, and was legally allowed to open this account," a Dabur spokesperson said in a statement.
"We have followed all the laws and the complete details regarding the account have been voluntarily, and as per law, filed with the Income Tax Department, and appropriate taxes paid, wherever applicable," he added.

Lodhiya denied having a Swiss bank account. "We have already declared in the income tax and there is nothing...we don't have any Swiss account that is the only thing which I can say," he said.
Radha Timbo declined to comment on her name being mentioned in the affidavit, saying she has to first study it before commenting.
The government in its 10-page affidavit submitted that it cannot disclose all the information and names of account holders in overseas banks, received from foreign countries, unless there is a "prima facie" evidence of wrongdoing for launching prosecution for tax evasion.

"The government is committed to disclose names of persons holding illegal money abroad. However, every account held by an Indian in a foreign country may not be illegal and the fundamental right of citizens to privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution cannot be ignored and has been recognised by this court," it said, adding the names and information/ documents cannot be disclosed even even under a proceedings under Article 32(1) of the Constitution.

PM Narendra Modi lauds Hrithik Roshan, Nagarjuna over Clean India drive

PM Narendra Modi lauds Hrithik Roshan, Nagarjuna over Clean India drive

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday lauded actors Hrithik Roshan and Nagarjuna for joining the "Swachh Bharat" mission, saying they will inspire others too.

"Am sure you all will get inspired by Hrithik's efforts! He has made a significant effort towards creating a Swachh Bharat. MyCleanIndia," Modi wrote on his Twitter handle.

His comments came hours after Hrithik Roshan tweeted: "Swachhbharat I started cleaning my own surroundings and learnt so much. Started with my lanes in Juhu.

"2day I pledge 2 keep my home, my roads, my city, my country clean. I also take responsibility 2 teach n empower others 2 follow."

In another tweet, Modi said: "Noted actor Nagarjuna joining Swachh Bharat Mission can draw many others towards our efforts to create a Clean India."

Modi launched the "Swachh Bharat Mission" campaign Oct 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Modi to NDA MPs: Let's think big, let's think far

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet projects such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the MP Model Village Scheme were among the key issues that were discussed threadbare at the high tea he convened on Sunday for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs at his 7 Race Course Road residence.
"Let us think big. Let us think far. Let us think above politics," Modi said while addressing NDA MPs at a post-Diwali high tea hosted by him at his residence.
The Prime Minister, who also talked about the recently launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, said the initiative has received tremendous response from all sections of society and called upon all NDA MPs to connect with people as they undertake efforts in this regard for Swachh Bharat in their areas.
He urged the MPs to visit schools in their areas over a five-day period beginning November 14, the 125th birth anniversary of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and explain to children the importance of hygiene.
Modi said that achieving Swachh Bharat is a tough call but can be achieved with the same spirit as people of the country got together to eradicate polio.
The meeting, the first such attempt by Modi after BJP-led NDA ousted the UPA, lasted for about two hours during which the MPs were also given presentations on PM's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Jan Dhan scheme, Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) and labour reforms by the ministers concerned.
Today's Diwali Milan get together hosted by the Prime Minister was equally significant as it came ahead of government formation in Maharashtra, amid speculation of a possible BJP-Shiv Sena tie-up.
"There was an elaborate discussion on many issues which the government has brought to the nation. We had an address by the Prime Minister who talked about cleanliness, various issues before the government, how a common MP can turn things in this country, how a common MP can be a symbol of positive political entity and how the respectability of politicians can be enhanced in the country," BJP general Secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters after the meeting.
He said the Prime Minister talked on a gamut of subjects and his spectrum was very wide as the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere.
"The Prime Minister happily endorsed the achievements of the BJP and greeted Amit Shah on his victory in Haryana and Maharashtra," Rudy said.
BJP's Kirti Azad said Modi's messages are always good for public. "He told us how we should serve people as sevaks".
Modi extended his greetings to all MPs, asking us to implement Swachhata Abhiyan in our respective fields, BJP's Parsottam Rupala added.
The MPs were given ministerial presentations on PM's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) at the tea party organised as part of Modi's Diwali Milan.
Union Minister for Rural Development Nitin Gadkari gave a presentation on Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY), while the presentation on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was given by Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu.
The Diwali Milan get together hosted by the Prime Minister is considered significant as it came ahead of government formation in Maharashtra, amid speculation of a possible BJP-Shiv Sena tie-up.
However, sources in the Shiv Sena said there were no talks on the government formation in Maharashtra during the meet. Shiv Sena MPs were also present in the tea party.
This included Union Minister Anant Geete but party supremo Uddhav Thackeray did not attend the get together as it was only meant for NDA MPs.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra BJP Legislature Party will meet on Tuesday to elect their leader, paving the way for him to meet Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao and stake claim to form the government.
The meeting to elect the Legislature Party Leader and the Chief Minister designate will be held at at Vidhan Bhavan on Tuesday (October 28), senior BJP leader Eknath Khadse said.

Narendra Modi wants 'Make in India', 'Digital India' as tools for improving healthcare

MUMBAI: Describing neonatal and maternal mortality rates as a matter of grave concern, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said his government wanted to effectively use its 'Make in India' and 'Digital India' campaigns to reach healthcare to the country's poorest of the poor.

Stressing upon cleanliness and hygiene, he said preventive care was the most important component of overall healthcare and also inexpensive.

"It is embarrassing to compare healthcare facilities in our country with those available abroad. Neonatal mortality is a matter of grave concern and so is maternal mortality.

"When a child falls into a borewell, families sit in front of TVs and the media gives a running commentary as gloom prevails everywhere, but we are hardly aware that hundreds of children die soon after being born. Many times, the mother and child both die for want of primary healthcare," he said after inaugurating the refurbished and partly newly built H N Reliance Foundation Hospital.

Addressing the gathering which included Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, his wife and Reliance Foundation chairperson Nita, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, Modi said he wanted 'Make in India' and 'Digital India' initiatives effective tools to reach best healtcare facilities to the people.

"Today, when diagnostic machines have replaced the doctor's expertise to a large extent, I want companies to come to India and manufacture expensive equipment needed for medical treatment, I want FDI to come into the sector.

"If hospitals like this are part of the network providing medical advice through telemedicine, quality healthcare can reach people living in remote areas for which Digital India can come in handy. I want the Digital India initiative to be effectively used for improving medicare and education," he said.

PM Modi interacts with media; thanks journalists for support in 'Swachh Bharat' mission

In his first interaction with the media after assuming office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday thanked journalists for their support in the 'Swachh Bharat' initiative.
"I have been reading a lot of articles both in print and social media on Swachh Bharat. While a lot of people are questioning whether it will be possible, the very fact that a subject that greatly injures India's image abroad is being discussed is important," Modi said. "Writing about clean India drive is a service to the nation," he urged.
"Preventive healthcare is more important than healthcare and cleanliness plays a very important role in that," Modi stressed. Lauding media for its mass outreach, Modi said, "The country's media can play an important role in the development of the nation. A PM's broom alone won't help, media has converted its pen into a broom and that alone is a big step," he said.
"I am trying my best to meet with the media more often. I have a lot to learn from media," Modi said. Modi also extended his greetings on the occassion of Diwali and festive season.
PM Modi interacts with media
Modi recalled his fond relations with the media when he was a BJP office-bearer before going to Gujarat as Chief Minister in 2001. Using the Diwali milan (get-together) organised by BJP chief Amit Shah at the party headquarters, Modi freely mixed with a few hundred journalists, including top editors and beat reporters.
"I used to arrange chairs here (BJP office) waiting for you (media). Those were different days when we used to interact freely. I had a beautiful relationship with you and it helped me in Gujarat," he told the assembled editors, reporters and other journalists.
Fondly recalling the deep relationship he had with the media, Modi said he was looking for ways to further deepen and expand the old relationship.
PM Modi interacts with Media
"Some way will be found. It is important to interact with media directly rather than the reportage and articles. By interacting directly, one gets to know things which media persons cannot report. Not only does one get information but also vision, which is very valuable," he said.

PM Narendra Modi hosts NDA MPs over high tea, Uddhav absent

PM Narendra Modi hosts NDA MPs over high tea, Uddhav absent

To boost BJP ties with its alliance partners, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hosted National Democratic Alliance MPs over a tea at his residence here.
While the meeting is underway, the NDA MPs reached 7 RCR at around 4:00 pm. However, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray gave it a miss.
Among those present in the meeting were BJP's veteran leaders LK Advani and MM Joshi, Cabinet Ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Arun Jaitley, Dr Harshvardhan, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Ram Vilas Paswan and BJP president Amit Shah.
This is for the first time the prime minister is interacting with all NDA MPs together after forming a government at Centre in May.
The prime minister had invited Shiv Sena also along with other NDA MPs. As Shiv Sena had called off an alliance with the BJP before Maharashtra Assembly elections, the invitation to the party for high tea is being considered as a way to restrengthen the alliance.
As per reports, Shiv Sena's lone representative in Modi's Cabinet, Anant Geethe, is leading the delegation.
Shiv Sena, however, sought to clear the confusion over Uddhav Thackeray's participation, saying since the event was only for the MPs belonging to the Centre's ruling alliance, their leader will not go.
"I will attend it and so will all Sena MPs," Shiv Sena's lone member in the Narendra Modi government Anant Geete told PTI.
"The event that the PM is hosting is only for the MPs of NDA partners. When Uddhavji is not an MP, where is the question of him being invited? This is not even a question worth asking," a senior Sena leader told PTI on condition of anonymity.
He said it is not as if leaders of other NDA constituents have been invited and Uddhav left out.
"It is not as if (Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader) Parkash Singh Badal has been invited and Uddhavji hasn't. Since (Union Food Minister and Lok Janshakti Party leader) Ram Vilas Paswan is a Member of Parliament, he has been invited for the event. Even our MPs have been invited and they will attend the event," he said.
He said Uddhav does not need a dinner invitation to meet Prime Minister Modi.
"If Uddhavji wants to meet PM Modi, he will directly go and meet him alone. Why should he need a dinner invite to meet him?" the Sena leader said.
Meanwhile, Athawale said Uddhav is "very keen" on his party forming a coalition government with BJP and that there is "no doubt now" about the alliance being revived.

Black money: Will reveal some names, says PM Modi

Black money: Will reveal some names, says PM ModiPrime Minister Narendra Modi with BJP President Amit Shah and party leaders.During the dinner with his council of ministers on Monday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reported to have said that his government would disclose names of some people undergoing probe for allegedly stashing black money abroad to the Supreme Court when it reconvenes after Diwali.
"Kuchh naam batayenge (we will reveal some names)," Modi is reported to have said at the hour-long dinner he hosted in his official residence on Monday, a day after the BJP's impressive victory in Maharashtra and Haryana.
In its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, the BJP had promised to bring back the money from foreign banks. Last week, however, the government told the Supreme Court that bilateral double taxation avoidance treaties stopped it from acting in the matter.
The Centre's statement in the Supreme Court created a massive furore, with opposition parties accusing the Modi government of doublespeak in the black money issue.
In a press conference last week, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley rejected the opposition's allegations that the government had made a U-turn, saying the the NDA government would not withhold any information, including the names of bank account holders, in cases where independent probe had been done by India.
Jaitley's statements came after a high-level delegation returned from Switzerland after holding talks with Swiss officials on over 700 Indians holding accounts accounts with the HSBC Bank in Geneva. The list was given to India by French authorities.
Meanwhile, the lone minister from Shiv Sena in his Cabinet, Anant Geete, also attended the PM's dinner on Monday amid reports that the BJP is in discussions with its former ally for forming the government in Maharashtra.

PM to spend diwali with flood hit people in kashmir

For Modi, this will be DiValley
PM to spend diwali with flood hit people in kashmir

Modi has already announced Rs 1,000 crore for rehabilitation of the state and promised to do whatever else the government can.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi  announced Tuesday his fourth visit to Kashmir since he took charge in May, this time to Srinagar on Diwali to “spend the day with our sisters and brothers affected by the unfortunate flood”.
The visit is likely to be only for a few hours Thursday but sends out a strong political signal of New Delhi reaching out to Srinagar, coming as it does when the Election Commission is expected to announce the dates for polls to the J&K Assembly soon. Modi’s BJP is on a high after winning the elections in Haryana and emerging as the largest party in Maharashtra.
The Centre is also working out the modalities for Modi to announce one more relief package for the flood-hit state to add to the Rs 1,000 crore announced earlier. The state government has submitted a memorandum to the Centre seeking a package of Rs 44,000 crore.
Said an official in Srinagar who is privy to the programme being chalked out for the visit: “The Prime Minister basically wants to meet people and express his support in the time of distress. If his stay in Srinagar is just 3-4 hours, we expect he will have time to meet seven or eight delegations and all this will be tied up by Wednesday. It is maybe because of the nature of the visit that instructions have already been sent that no meal will be required for him in Srinagar.”
A shortlist of delegations who could meet the Prime Minister was being drawn up in Srinagar this evening and would be sent to the PMO Wednesday for clearance. It is expected that these delegations would include craftspersons, hotel owners, traders, house boat owners and others who were worst-hit by the floods. Modi could also meet senior Army officers and soldiers who were involved in the rescue and relief operations.
Officials said that the venue for the Prime Minister’s meetings could either be the Raj Bhavan or the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre, depending on the size of the delegations. “If the strength of the delegations is small or medium, the Raj Bhavan would be a suitable location,” an official said. Security checks were being conducted at both the venues Tuesday and a final decision would be taken tomorrow.
Modi’s tweet announcing the visit drew a range of reactions in the valley, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and opposition PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti welcoming the move, and separatist leaders terming it as “cultural aggression” and calling for a shutdown Thursday.

Omar Abdullah hails, Shashi Tharoor flays Narendra Modi’s plan to spend Diwali with Kashmir’s flood-hit people

SRINAGAR/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday appreciated Narendra Modi's gesture to spend Diwali with people of the flood-affected state, while Congress MP Shashi Tharoor disapproved of the Prime Minister's plan.

"I appreciate the gesture of @narendramodi to mark Diwali by spending it with the flood affected people of J&K in Srinagar, the worst hit," Omar wrote on Twitter.

In an apparent reference to opposition PDP, the chief minister said those questioning the timing of Prime Minister's visit on Diwali instead of Eid, would also be cursing the government due to restrictions necessitated by either strike called by the separatists or security arrangements made for such high profile visits.
"The people asking why Diwali & why not Eid would've been the same people cursing because of the restrictions caused by hartal/security," he said.

"Let's just appreciate that @narendramodi is in Srinagar on his festival and not at home celebrating as he normally would have been doing," he added.
The Prime Minister on Tuesday tweeted that he would be spending Diwali with flood-affected "brothers and sisters" in Srinagar. "Will be in Srinagar on Diwali, 23rd October & will spend the day with our sisters & brothers affected by the unfortunate flood," Modi tweeted.

Tharoor flays PM's plan

Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who had recently earned the party's ire for supporting the "Swachh Bharat" mission of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, disapproved of Modi's plan to spend the Diwali on October 23 in Srinagar.

"Srinagar is a great idea but it would have been better if there wasn't an election looming in the state," Tharoor tweeted.

Assembly elections are due in Jammu & Kashmir this year-end.

The Congress had on October 13 removed Tharoor as the party's spokesman after the party's Kerala unit lodged a complaint against him for praising Modi.

The Kerala PCC leadership had demanded "appropriate action" against the Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram for his "pro-Modi stands", including unilaterally accepting the PM's invitation to be a brand ambassador of Swachh Bharat campaign.

The report of the Kerala unit had held that Tharoor's adulatory statements about Modi had hurt Congress workers in Kerala, who had worked sincerely and tirelessly for his victory from Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat.

Exit polls: Narendra Modi will snatch Maharashtra and Haryana from Congress

NEW DELHI: The BJP will form the next government in both Maharashtra and Haryana, exit polls predicted on Wednesday. The only thing they did not agree on was whether the party would win a clear majority on its own.

If the polls are proved right, it would validate the BJP's bold gamble in going it alone in both states, as well as its focus on a Narendra Modi-centred campaign that dwelt more on governance issues than on the communal rhetoric often associated with the saffron party.

Of the four exit polls that made projections for Maharashtra, one — done by Today's Chanakya — gave the BJP 151 seats or a clear majority in the 288-member assembly. Another, done by AC Nielsen for ABP News, predicted the party would just hit the half-way mark of 144.
Maharastra Exit Polls

The CVoter poll conducted for Times Now gave the BJP 138 seats and the Cicero poll for the India Today group gave it 124. In the latter two, while the BJP would need some support from others it should hardly find that a problem.

Interestingly, the Sena too is not seen as a major loser, at least in terms of seats, from the break-up of the 25-year old alliance with the BJP. All the polls agreed that it would finish second and that it would improve significantly upon its 2009 tally of 44 seats, though the numbers varied from 59 to 77. Three of the four polls put the Congress in third spot, just a little ahead of the NCP while one had it the other way round. The MNS would get fewer than the 13 seats it won in 2009, according to all the polls.

In Haryana, only three polls made predictions and two of them gave the BJP a clear majority, while the third had it hitting the half-way mark. The ABP News poll suggested the BJP would win 54 seats in the 90-member house, Today's Chanakya put the figure at 52 and CVoter at 45. If any of these comes true, the BJP would comfortably form the government in the state.
Haryana Exit Polls

The polls were also unanimous that Om Prakash Chautala's INLD would finish second with about 22-23 seats, the Congress a distant third and Kuldeep Bishnoi's HJCBL an also ran.

If these polls are proved right, it would mean a major boost for brand Modi, wiping out any dent made by the earlier by-poll results in several states. It would also send a strong signal to BJP allies that they would be ill-advised to try any hard bargaining with the BJP, as the Sena did.

Such a result would also add to the perception that the Congress is a party currently in free fall and hence add to the pressure on its leadership.

PM Narendra Modi replaces Finance secretary Arvind Mayaram in first major shakeup

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transferred Arvind Mayaram, the top civil servant at the finance ministry.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transferred Arvind Mayaram, the top civil servant at the finance ministry.

In a surprise development, Finance Secretary Arvind Mayaram has been shunted out of the Finance Ministry and given a low profile Ministry of Tourism.
In orders issued yesterday, Mayaram, a 1978-batch IAS officer belonging to Rajasthan cadre, was made the Tourism Secretary in place of Parvez Dewan on his retirement at month end.
In his place, Rajiv Mehrishi, an IAS officer of the same batch as Mayaram and from the same state, was appointed Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance.

Mayaram’s transfer was part of the first major Secretary-level reshuffle undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government.
In all, 20 senior officials were transfered yesterday, many at the level of secretary. Mehrishi, who was appointed Rajasthan chief secretary in December last year by the Vasundhara Raje Government, was earlier on deputation at the Centre as secretary with the department of fertilisers.
Anil Swarup, a 1981 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as new Coal Secretary. Swarup, who is working in Cabinet Secretariat, will replace S K Srivastava, after his superannuation on October 31.

Shramev Jayate: Modi launches labour-friendly scheme for Skilled India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched labour-reform initiatives under the name of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Shramev Jayate scheme.
Shramev Jayate has the same power as Satyamev Jayate for the development of our nation, PM Modi said.
"White-collar jobs are considered good, we'll have to change the way we look at labour," PM Modi further said.
"How to change the work culture? These efforts are a great example," said Modi amid applause. "This is Minimum Government Maximum Governance."
The prime minister said: "E-governance is easy governance. It builds trust for transparency."
On Inspector Raj, he said a computer now determines where an inspection will be carried out the next day. He also said the number of forms that companies have to fill regarding their labour force has been reduced from as many as 16 to just one now. This form can be filed online.
Modi dedicated a Shram Suvidha portal, Labour Inspection scheme and Portability through Universal Account Number (UAN) for Employees Provident Fund at an event in Vigyan Bhavan here.
He also released a booklet of National Brand Ambassadors for Vocational Training and Souvenir for All India Skill Competitions.
"Skill (development) is the need of the hour. We have to create a Skilled India and increase the scale," Cabinet Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said at Shramev Jayate programme

Modi wave resurfaces: Exit polls indicate big victory for BJP in Maharashtra and Haryana

NEW DELHI: The Narendra Modi-Amit Shah gamble of going solo in Maharashtra and Haryana seems to have paid off if exit polls are any indication. Every single poll showed BJP emerging on top with one poll even predicting the party will score a simple majority on its own in these two states.

BJP's seat tally in Maharashtra, according to various polls, varied from just over 100 to 150-plus, the latter a clear majority mark in a 288-member assembly. In 90-seat Haryana, exit polls gave BJP between 37 and 50-plus seats; the latter a majority mark.

Interestingly, BJP's stellar performance in Maharashtra, according to exit polls, comes from winning around 27% vote share. A five-cornered contest, a consolidated vote for Modi, and fragmentation of votes between Congress, NCP and the two Senas would seem to explain BJP's big seat gains with less than 30% vote share.

Maharashtra, therefore, in some ways mirrors the general election results in May, where BJP won 282 seats in the 545member Lok Sabha with just over 30% of the national vote.

Modi wave resurfaces: Exit polls indicate big victory for BJP in Maharashtra and Haryana
The Modi-Shah strat egy of aggressive pitch for votes in the name of Modi and tight orga nisational approach would seem to have paid off again, assuming exit polls have got the picture right.
The polls also predicted Congress performing poorly in both states, and indicated that dynasty big guns such as Thackerays and Pawars in Maharashtra and Lals in Haryana could be rendered irrelevant for now. For Prime Minister Modi, a victory in the polls would be a personal credit since the party had gone to the people without projecting any local leader as chief minister and had sought votes in his name. For BJP president Shah, who took the audacious call to sever ties with 25-year-old ally ally Shiv Sena in Maharashtra and HJC in Haryana just days before the polls, a stellar performance would be a fitting reply to the critics who had railed him for the bad performance of the party in assembly bypolls in Uttar Pradesh last month.

Good results in the two states will increase BJP's Rajya Sabha tally, giving it more legislative elbow room in Parliament. If actual results mirror exit polls', Modi-Shah's grand plan of making BJP the main party in every major state will gain a huge fillip. The relevance of NDA may come under question in case of major solo wins in the next round of assembly elections.

President Ghani conveyed his deep sense

President Ghani conveyed his deep sense of appreciation for Prime Minister Modi's congratulations. He described India as the foundation of Afghanistan's diplomacy and economic strategy and complimented Prime Minister on his electoral success and his development vision, which would be beneficial for Afghanistan and the entire region.
President Ghani also accepted Prime Minister Modi's invitation to visit India at the earliest opportunities and also suggested immediate commencement of dialogue between the two governments, including between their national security advisors and economic advisors.
Bilaterally, India has played a significant role in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Afghanistan. India's extensive developmental assistance programme, which now stands at around USD 2 billion, is a strong signal of its abiding commitment to peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan during this critical period of security and governance transition.
This makes India one of the leading donor nations to Afghanistan , and by far the largest from among the regional countries.

PM Modi Launches Village Development Project

PM Modi Launches Village Development Project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching the project in New Delhi
NEW DELHI Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the 'Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana', a village development project under which each member of parliament will take the responsibility of developing physical and institutional infrastructure in three villages by 2019.

At the launch in New Delhi, PM Modi said,"We are nearly 800 MPs. If before 2019, we develop three villages each, we reach nearly 2,500 villages. If in the light of this scheme, the states also create a similar scheme for MLAs, then 6000-7000 more villages can be added."

The Prime Minister added that if one village is developed in a block, it is also likely to have a "viral" effect and development would permeate other villages too.

PM Modi remarked that the scheme is flexible and that an MP is free to choose any village. The only condition is that it should not be his own village or that of his in-laws.

"I also have to choose a village in Varanasi," the Prime Minister said and added that he would go there, discuss and choose a village.

Till now, the model of development being followed in the country has largely been supply-driven, PM Modi said.

"In Delhi, Lucknow or Gandhinagar, a scheme is prepared and then an attempt is made to inject it everywhere. Through this 'Adarsh Gram' (scheme), we want to shift from supply-driven to demand-driven model," he said.

He also said that an atmosphere should be created where every person is proud of his or her village.

Indian government signing sports MOUs with various countries: Narendra Modi

Indian government signing sports MOUs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the government in its bid to provide the athletes with better exposure and proper infrastructure is signing MoUs related to sports expertise with various countries. "No sportsperson goes to a tournament thinking about losing. They always want to win the competition. But they have found lack of exposure, proper training facilities, infrastructure and proper environment. But in the recent times, some of the state governments have paid attention on these aspects," Modi said while addressing the Asian Games medal winners at his residence today.
"Some of states now have separate Sports Universities.
Indian Government is signing MOUs on sports expertise with various governments." Modi said that he has spoken to Australian Prime Minister seeking the country's infrastructural expertise in India. "I had a detailed discussions with Australian PM asking him how their country can help us improving our sports infrastructure. I believe we need to do a sports mapping in India. For example, Haryana has strong and courageous people and the state should concentrate on a specific sports.
